The Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI) is a longitudinal survey of people aged 45 and older and their partners, living in private households in India. Its main goal is to provide a data resource on aging for multidisciplinary studies and policy-making. The survey elicits information about demographics, health, cognition, family and social networks, healthcare access and utilization, retirement and pension, employment, consumption, assets, and income.
The LASI sample is a nationally representative sample of the population aged 45 years and older, living in private households in India. The sample is also representative of India’s 29 states and 6 union territories and four selected metropolitan cities (Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai). The initial sample was recruited in 2017/19 using a stratified, multistage cluster sampling of all households in India.

The LASI core interview was conducted through face-to-face interviews using computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) in 2017/19.
In addition to the core interview, LASI also collects a number of other types of data.
|Health Assessment||Conducted at Wave 1 among all respondents.|
|Cognitive Assessment||Conducted in a sub-study of LASI called the Diagnostic Assessment of Dementia (LASI-DAD). LASI-DAD used the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) on a sub-sample of LASI respondents aged 60 and older and living in 18 states at Wave 1.|
|Blood-Based Biomarkers||Capillary blood was collected at Wave 1 among all LASI respondents via dried blood spots. Venous blood was drawn at Wave 1 among a sub-sample of LASI-DAD respondents.|
|Brain Imaging||Structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was conducted at Wave 1 among a sub-sample of LASI-DAD respondents.|
|Genetic Data||Genotyping was performed for a sub-sample of LASI-DAD respondents using the Illumina Infinium Global Screening Array-24 v2.0 (GSA) BeadChip. Whole genome sequencing is currently in progress for a sub-sample of LASI-DAD respondents.|
|Community Characteristics||Collected at Wave 1 for the communities where LASI respondents reside.|
|COVID-19 Phone Survey||Bi-monthly survey using computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) is in progress for a sub-sample of LASI-DAD households to monitor the health and economic impacts of COVID-19 pandemic.|
The LASI Wave 1 sample included 44,462 households containing 82,650 individuals and their spouses. The LASI sample has not been refreshed.
The Gateway to Global Aging Data has created several user-friendly datasets based on LASI data designed to allow researchers to conduct cross-wave and cross-study analysis.
