KLoSA: Study Overview
The Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) is a panel survey of people aged 45 and older and their partners, living in private households in Korea. Its main goal is to provide a data resource on aging for cross-disciplinary studies and policy-making. The survey elicits information about demographics, family structure, health, healthcare use, cognition, job status, income, assets, and life satisfaction.
The KLoSA sample is a nationally representative sample of the population aged 45 years and older, living in private households in Korea. The initial sample was recruited in 2006 using a multistage, stratified probability sampling of households in all geographic areas except for Jeju Island.
Age Eligibility | Age 45 and older |
---|---|
People Interviewed per Household | All eligible residents of household |
Spouse Inclusion | Only if age eligible |
Representativeness | Nationally representative |
Institutional Representation | None |

The KLoSA core interview is carried out every two years through face-to-face interviews using computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) since 2006.
In addition to the core interview, KLoSA also collects a number of other types of data.
End of Life Interview | Conducted starting at Waves 2 with someone knowledgeable about deceased respondents. |
---|---|
Job History Interview | Conducted between Waves 1 and 2 for all respondents. |
Health Assessment | Conducted at each wave for all respondents. |
The KLoSA Wave 1 sample included 7,574 households. Since then, the KLoSA sample was refreshed at Wave 5.
KLoSA does not include any data linkages.
Public access KLoSA data can be downloaded from the Korea Employment Information Service (KEIS). Data are anonymized and only require registration with KEIS.
