Harmonized ELSA Creation Code

An older version of the Harmonized ELSA dataset (Version E) can be downloaded directly from the UK Data Service: Download Harmonized ELSA Data

The Harmonized ELSA version G dataset is created using data from the 34th edition of the ELSA, released May 2021.

*Harmonized ELSA G contains 10,533 variables and will require Stata/SE or Stata/MP.

Download the Harmonized ELSA Stata Creation Code.

To run the Harmonized ELSA Creation Code in Stata:

  • From UKDS, download ELSA data.
  • Store all ELSA data files in one folder without any sub-folders on your computer.
  • Edit lines 14 and 15 of the Stata Creation Code to list the folder location of the ELSA data and the folder location where you would like to save the Harmonized ELSA dataset.

If you would prefer to work with the Harmonized ELSA dataset in a statistical package other than Stata, you can convert the Harmonized ELSA Stata dataset using a program such as Stat/Transfer. If you do not have access to Stat/Transfer, you may be able to read the .dta dataset into your stat package using an “import” or “get” function. When reading a .dta dataset into another package, it is best to first save the dataset in a Stata version 12 format using the command saveold.
